One person can look at a picture and describe one thing and another person another thing. Why is that? Perspective. We each have a different way of looking at things.
If you are mentally bogged down with unpleasant thoughts, what perspective are you focusing on? If you say there is no other way to look at this ugly situation then it will remain unpleasant for you and every time you think about it, it will hurt. I would not call that encouragement. And yet, we have a God of encouragement.
Psa 119:28 My soul melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word. KJV
Psa 119:28 I am overcome with sorrow. Encourage me, as you have promised to do. CEV
Where do we get this encouragement?
Rom 15:4 And the Scriptures were written to teach and encourage us by giving us hope. CEV
So, reading the scriptures can encourage us. Hearing someone teach the scriptures can encourage us.
And really, it’s as easy as turning a switch. When you turn a wall switch on you get what? Light. And light is what we want to incubate. Yes, the darkness is there, we see it, we acknowledge it, but we don’t flood our hearts with it. We flood our hearts with light and hope. We can focus on the good. Sometimes we have to dig to find the light in a situation but that’s what we incubate.
2Sa 22:29 For thou art my lamp, O LORD: and the LORD will lighten my darkness.
2Sa 22:30 For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall.
2Sa 22:31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
2Sa 22:32 For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?
2Sa 22:33 God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect.
2Sa 22:34 He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places. KJV
Just like the mother deer (the hind) mentioned here that is sure-footed, making way for her young to follow her, God’s way is sure-footed, following Him. When we track with Him, we are set on high places.
So, how can we be bogged-down with darkness, unpleasant thoughts, hopelessness, when we have the ability to flip the switch, to gain a better perspective by focusing on what is good and pleasant? Yes the darkness is still there to deal with. Yes we have to figure it out or let it play out and eventually be victorious, but in the meantime we don’t allow depression or negative incubation to control our thinking. Otherwise, how can we come up with positive ideas when we are so absorbed in darkness?
Eph 5:13 But the light will show what these things are really like. CEV
We keep a good balance of acknowledging the darkness and utilizing light to bring victory.
Eph 1:18 My prayer is that light will flood your hearts and that you will understand the hope that was given to you when God chose you. Then you will discover the glorious blessings that will be yours together with all of God’s people. CEV
